Firefly - tailored for T2

[Rainfastness & Formulation Technology]

Firefly is a simple, one-pack fungicide designed to fit the needs of the grower looking for a broadacre solution for first class Septoria and rust control at the flag leaf (T2) spray timing on winter wheat.

It's formulated to deliver the right dose of the Septoria azole and rust active strobilurin for T2 in one 10L pack.

How do I use Firefly?

To get the best out of Firefly at T2, and save time and waste from using a single pack solution use:

  • 1.2L/ha on crops with moderate disease risk
  • 1.5L/ha on crops with high Septoria and/or rust risk

These simple dose choices deliver the right ratio of active ingredients for the T2 timing. They also provide you with the security of proven Septoria credentials of prothioconazole plus the most active rust strobilurin, fluoxastrobin. Both active ingredients uniquely contribute towards canopy greening, and are formulated to secure exceptional crop coverage and rain-fastness.

What can I expect from T2 Firefly vs current standards?

In twelve T2 trials in 2008, comparing 1.5L/ha Firefly against the current standard 0.75L/ha epoxiconazole + 0.4L/ha pyraclostrobin (200g formulation)

  • 67% of trials  favoured Firefly (average yield benefit = 0.5t/ha)
  • 8% of trials were equivalent
  • 25% of trials favoured epoxiconazole + pyraclostrobin (average yield benefit 0.1t/ha)

Taking into account all 12 trials, Firefly secured an average extra 0.3t/ha, worth about £30/ha extra margin over fungicide cost @ £110/t wheat.

Yield advantage to Firefly (t/ha)

Mean of 12 Trials 2008:  1.5L/ha Firefly vs 0.75L EPX + 0.4L pyraclostrobin 200. Wheat at £110/ha

Although the best return on investment is delivered at T2, Firefly can be used at T1 where early brown rust is a key focus. If Septoria and stem base disease risk is high, use a 1.5L/ha rate to match the performance of 0.6L/ha Proline.

Firefly is an ideal upgrade for a general purpose 'foliar top-up driven' T3 spray, where mycotoxin risk is low and there is a need for a top-up to Septoria and brown rust control on the flag leaf. Use at 0.75 - 1.0L/ha.

Where mycotoxin risk is moderate to high, a prothioconazole only (Proline) approach is critical. This is because fluoxastrobin, although having some activity on true Fusarium at label doses, does not deliver the outstanding broad ear blight activity of prothioconazole - which is where £/ha spend should be diverted.
