Seed Treatment

Deter - pests

Deter - staying ahead of changing pests threats

Based on the systemic insecticide clothianidin, Deter seed treatments deliver a wide spectrum of pest activity. Damage caused by below-ground, stem-boring and foliar pests is reduced, resulting in better crop establishment, improved crop vigour and enhanced yields.

  • Below-ground pests include: slugs, wireworm
  • Stem-borers include: gout-fly, frit-fly
  • Foliar pests include: aphids which transmit BYDV, Wessex flea beetle

Of these pests, initial seedling establishment in the autumn is threatened by slugs, wireworm, Wessex flea beetle and frit-fly, establishment of optimum tiller numbers is threatened by all of these plus gout-fly, and crop health, vigour and yield is further significantly endangered by BYDV.

From these trials results, and the on-farm use images below, it's clear that Deter has a strong role in crop establishment through reduction in damage from a wide range of pests.

Deter products provide robust aphid and BYDV control in cereals reducing the need for follow-up sprays. They allow hard-pressed farm resources to be deployed elsewhere during the busy autumn season.

Recommendations for Deter product use and BYDV control are based on key factors which influence the occurrence and severity of this disease. BYDV control levels from Deter are dependent on:

  • Crop drilling date
  • Crop sowing rate
  • Geographical location
  • Seasonal climate
  • Aphid pressure, virus strain and infectivity

The most robust control will be achieved from later sowings of treated seed using higher seed rates. Earlier sown crops from low seed rates will require more intensive monitoring for aphids and may need 1-2 follow-up pyrethroid sprays - see below:

Late August / Early September drillings (at 80-125Kg/ha):

  • 80 Kg/ha is the minimum suggested seed rate.
  • Remember Deter is the start point in a programme for BYDV control.
  • The first follow-up spray will be required after 6-8 weeks if the seed rate is 80-100Kg/ha (in mid-late October) plus one more spray in mid to late November if conditions are mild. This interval can be extended to 7-9 weeks if the seed rate is over 100Kg/ha.

Mid September drillings (at 100 - 125 Kg/ha):

  • Deter may need a follow-up pyrethroid spray, especially if drilling at 100Kg/ha, or in areas of high aphid pressure.
  • Follow-up spray if required would be after 8-10 weeks - ie. mid-late November.

Late September drillings onwards (at 125 - 150 Kg/ha):

  • At this drilling date and using higher sowing rates (eg.150 Kg/Ha) Deter will give protection for over 10 weeks - so under normal aphid pressure no follow-up is required, and Deter can fully replace a programme of two pyrethroid sprays.
  • In all the above scenario's if the season or location favours late aphid fly in beyond early/mid November, a pyrethroid spray at or beyond the end of November may be required.
