Bayer CropScience and Farmers Weekly have set up a special Kids Connect Campaign, in association with The Co-op, to promote the Year of Food and Farming. The Campaign hopes to help teachers make contact with farms that are interested in school visits and have CEVAS (Countryside Educational Visits Accreditation Scheme) certification. The Kids Connect website provides advice for farmers, fun information about farming and links to a special panel where they answer kids' questions about farming.
Recent research by FACE (Farming and Countryside Education) shows there is a growing awareness of the countryside and the role it plays in young lives - but there are still many misunderstandings. The Year of Food and Farming aims to increase the level of contact schoolchildren have with agriculture, by encouraging more farmers to host school visits or go into the classroom to share experiences.
"The Year of Food and Farming is about the whole industry pulling together to bridge the gap between farming and schools. The Kids Connect Campaign is our contribution to this process but really it is down to individual farmers to seize the initiative and get involved. We hope our campaign will provide you with information and motivation to make your contribution" - Philip Clarke, Kids Connect Campaign Director.
The Kids Connect Campaign will help promote the Year of Food and Farming, which kicks off in September. One of the first big events will be the Bayer CropScience Farming and Countryside Education Awards, which will celebrate the very best in farming education.
