Bayer CropScience EC formulation technology
Emulsion concentrate formulations have distinct benefits over SCs as they tend to facilitate better biological performance of the active ingredients. The active ingredients are dissolved, rather than suspended. In water they form very fine stable emulsions ensuring superior rainfastness and crop coverage. ECs are technically more difficult to create than SCs, and Bayer CropScience has developed this technology over many years.
ECs such as Proline generally contain water insoluble oily solvents into which the active ingredient and tailored adjuvant systems is dissolved. These microscopic droplets are stabilised so that they do not disintegrate in the spray solution. So the active ingredient is delivered as an emulsion onto the crop, which means that it is quickly rainfast and durable. After the evaporation of water, tailored oil adjuvants, delivered at optimal dose, help spread the active ingredient on the leaf surface to ensure a rainfast 'reservoir' for long-lasting protection and sustained penetration for curative activity.
Firefly contains unique patented EC technology, which is a further step forward. The oily solvent in which prothioconazole and fluoxastrobin is delivered is water soluble, and yet remains stable in the spray tank for as long as water insoluble oil ECs. As well as a tailored adjuvant system, the patented formulation contains emulsion stabilisers and crystallisation inhibitors. This means that apart from being 'sprayer friendly', there is a further enhancement of biological activity of the active ingredients prothioconazole and fluoxastrobin, without losing the retention, rainfastness and persistency benefits. What the grower sees is exceptional crop coverage and performance almost independent of water volume, spray quality, temperature or air humidity.

Bayer EC formulation technology is also utilised to full advantage within the prothioconazole + tebuconazole (Prosaro) and prothioconazole + spiroxamine (Helix) co-formulations. In both formulations there are uptake synergies with prothioconazole from the partner active ingredient, which have been exploited within the formulations. This means that the formulations perform better than a tank mixture of the components. They can enhance the Septoria performance in specific situations and extend the flexibility of rust control in high risk situations.
