STEWARDSHIP MATTERS
Good stewardship practices are vital to protect the future of Temik and other nematicides. That was the opening message from environmental stewardship manager Steve Higginbotham at the launch of the 2004 stewardship programme earlier in January.
"All nematicides are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and demand the same respect for stewardship", he warned. "So it's important to apply the correct dose and deliver it to the correct place. Incorrect use opens up potential risks to the operator, the environment, wildlife and pets."
The workshop provided simple practical tips and solutions to prevent spillage, over application and inadequate incorporation. Workshop delegates also learnt how to calibrate applicators in readiness for use this spring.
"Headlands are particularly high-risk areas, as are row ends with in furrow application during potato planting", Mr Higginbotham advised. "So we strongly recommend retro-fitting electric clutches or hydraulic landwheel lifts to disengage applicator drives and avoid granules being left un-incorporated."
"Poor filling practices and poorly maintained machines can lead to spillage. Simple, fast and tamper-proof, the Ultima closed transfer system minimises operator contact and environmental risks. But operators must avoid the temptation to use the containers as a way of increasing hopper capacity."
Growers and operators wanting to attend a nematicide stewardship workshop should contact their agrochemical supplier or call Bayer Assist on 0845 6092266. Attendance qualifies for 8 NRoSO points.
