Usage Guidance

Water volume: 80-200 L/ha

Sequences: Betanal Expert, Betanal Flow and Nortron Flo mixtures can be used following standard pre-emergence treatments of Goltix WG, Pyramin DF, Venzar Flowable or Fiesta T.

No restrictions exist following seed treatments, provided that lenacil has not been used pre-emergence in conjunction with Cruiser Force.

Crop health: The safety of herbicides to the beet crop will vary with conditions at and around the time of application. As the beet plants are small and grow rapidly they can be affected by almost any change in conditions and as a result become stressed. This may not always be visible until affected by other factors such as a herbicide spray. Application to crops suffering from stress may lead to a check to growth from which the crop may not recover and in extreme cases may lead to crop loss.

Stress can be caused by a number of circumstances, the most important of which are as follows:

  • Periods of low temperatures or frost
  • Substantial day to night temperature fluctuations
  • Temperatures above 21°C on the day of spraying (when the temperature is, or is likely to be, above 21°C on the day of spraying application should be made after 5pm)
  • Nutrient deficiency such as manganese
  • Soil acidity
  • Wind or hail damage
  • Use after other herbicides
  • High light intensity (ie full sunlight - May to June)
  • Pest or fungal attack

Mixtures with oil : For improved weed control in difficult circumstances - e.g. larger weeds, low soil moisture, cool dull conditions, Betanal Expert or Betanal Flow treatments can be tank mixed with mineral oil (those containing over 90% highly refined mineral oil) or esterified rape oil.

Do NOT use oil during periods of rapid growth or when crops are under stress. Where weeds are actively growing (particularly in moist soils and warm conditions) the addition of oil is seldom beneficial. The dose of oil in the tank mixture should be varied according to the maximum temperature on the day of spraying, according to the following guidelines.

Maximum temperature on the day of spraying Dose of oil (L/ha)
 up to 14°C 1.00
 14 - 18°C 0.75
 18 - 21°C 0.50
 above 21°C no oil recommended

See table of treatments for the specific recommendations with oil.

General mixing procedure: Shake Betanal Expert, Betanal Flow and Nortron Flo containers well, before use.

Mixtures with WDGs and wettable powders: WDGs and wettable powders should be added to the tank one third full of clean water and dispersed before adding the Betanal product. Agitate and allow to fully disperse. Add the required quantity of the Betanal product and complete filling. Maintain agitation throughout mixing and spraying. This procedure applies for mixing Goltix WG with Nortron Flo.

Sprayer cleaning: Before spraying, wash out the sprayer, spraybars and nozzles to ensure that there are no traces of previous chemicals. This is most important after hormone and sulfonyl urea weedkillers. Contaminated hoses should be replaced by new hoses. After each day's work, drain the sprayer, wash thoroughly with water and appropriate cleaner and spray out completely. Ensure that all liquid is removed from the sprayer tank, pump and hoses. Remove nozzles, open tank and drain pump to allow free access of air to all parts of the system.

Black-grass control:

  • Useful control of black-grass may be achieved in sugar beet using products with different modes of action from those commonly used in cereal crops
  • Betanal Expert + Debut + (Venzar Flowable or Goltix WG + Toil) : 1.0 + 0.01 + (0.2 or 0.3 + 0.5) L or kg/ha
  • DO NOT apply during periods of frost or rapid beet growth
  • Post-em treatments must be timed when black-grass is at the 1-2 leaf stage, GS 11-12 (at each weed flush)
  • If 100% control is not achieved, use Aramo at 1.0 L/ha as the final application in the programme to control remaining black-grass
