Slug monitoring requires vigilance this autumn
The dry spring has affected slug numbers currently being trapped but the wet weather means that numbers could bounce back at any stage.
Trapping is revealing some interesting differences compared to previous seasons. Professor David Glen of Styloma Research and Consulting has found fewer slugs in traps following oilseed rape than after spring crops. Prof. Glen suggests an explanation is that oilseed rape took more moisture in the spring from the soil than spring-sown crops and this meant that slugs did not thrive so well in the rape.
