(Active substances: clothianidin and beta-cyfluthrin)
Modesto is our recommended insecticide seed treatment for winter oilseed rape. It provides enhanced protection against early pest attacks and helps to control aphid-transmitted diseases. As a result, Modesto delivers stronger seedling establishment, improved crop vigour and increased yields.
Modesto is part of our next generation of products, providing more robust control than competitive products. Modesto gives longer lasting performance and better treatment. It assists successful establishment of low seed rate crops such as hybrids. On average Modesto increases yields by one third of a tonne per hectare. It provides additional control of minor and regional pests.
Quality of application is crucial to making sure that you get the best out of Modesto. Using a Bayer CropScience approved treater will ensure that you receive the maximum benefit from your investment in the product.
If aphid fly-in is prolonged or flea beetle presence is high, follow-up foliar sprays may be required in order to maximise the benefits of Modesto.
Modesto does not protect against slug attack. Remember to use slug pellets such as Draza forte (methiocarb) at crop emergence.
Modesto contains two powerful insecticides, clothianidin and beta-cyfluthrin
Safe on all varieties of winter oilseed rape
Treated seed may be stored for up to 18 months
First subsequent foliar spray should be made with a non-neonicotinoid insecticide (e.g. pyrethroid)
Modesto oilseed rape seed treatment will give you a better crop than you thought possible.
Not only does Modesto cover a wider range of pest threats more effectively than other OSR seed treatments; it's approved and proven to control yield-robbing TuYV (Turnip Yellows Virus).
Modesto's long-lasting activity gives extra flexibility in farm workload systems during the busy autumn period. It can also save using a pyrethroid spray for cabbage stem flea beetle or turnip sawfly.
What's more, it's available with HY-PRO Duet fungicide to deliver the best possible establishment.
It's vital to knock pest pressure on the head from the start to prevent problems getting into the crop. Modesto gives visibly stronger seedling establishment, followed by greater plant health through the season.
With the broadest pest spectrum, Modesto is effective at controlling existing pests and new threats brought by warmer autumns - especially TuYV, which can reduce yield by 30%.
Modesto produces superb results at harvest. It increases yield by 0.34t/ha* and significantly improves seed quality and the percentage of oil content. Simply, you'll see more great black stuff in the silo.

Autumn aphids
Essential protection with associated reduction in TuYV
Recent milder autumns have seen a huge increase in early aphids, such as the peach potato aphid (Myzus persicae), and transmitted Turnip Yellows Virus in oilseed rape crops. TuYV seriously affects all aspects of plant development.
It can hit yields by up to 30% and reduce the percentage and quality of oil per seed.
Modesto is extremely effective against autumn aphids, leading to reduced TuYV infection with bigger, healthier plants established at flowering. This graph shows TuYV control where infection is less than 85%. Very high infections cannot usually be controlled by seed treatment alone.

TuYV Survey 2010
Modesto was developed for exactly the kind of situation where warmer autumns are likely to bring a significant increase in pest threats. Our most up-to-date TuYV survey covering 32 UK sites is bearing this out. The disease is present across all areas surveyed, with crops in many areas having significant and damaging levels of infection.
Cabbage root fly
Decreases root damage
You can't immediately see the root and subterranean stem damage caused by cabbage root fly larvae, but it stunts plant growth above and below ground. Cabbage root fly was a minor problem in Germany, but with warmer autumns quickly became the main OSR autumn pest threat. The same may be happening in the UK, especially with early sowings.
Modesto reduces larval feeding for better establishment and early vigour. This prevents seedling loss and gives greater crop health through the season.

Turnip sawfly
Reduces larval infestation and leaf damage
Turnip sawfly larvae can eat like there's no tomorrow. If you don't monitor regularly they can quickly skeletonise the leaves of oilseed rape seedlings, ruining a crop's potential.
Clothianidin, one of Modesto's active substances, gives useful control of turnip sawfly larvae with a considerable reduction in leaf damage. In most cases the seed treatment will prevent crop loss and avoid the need for a reactive foliar treatment.

Cabbage stem flea beetle
Robust control against shot-holing damage
Early attacks of adult cabbage stem flea beetle can damage cotyledons and seedlings, leading to seedling vigour reduction or death. This results in a thinner, weaker crop to work with.
Modesto's complementary active substances clothianidin and beta-cyfluthrin protect against shot-holing damage to give significantly improved vigour and increased yield.
Seedling diseases
The final building block for superb establishment
Apply Modesto with HY-PRO Duet fungicide and you'll benefit from a powerful combination: HY-PRO Duet gives very good reduction in a number of diseases including damping off, Alternaria and the stem blackening and leaf spotting symptoms of seedling Phoma.
It increases crop stand and reduces incidence of the disease on the cotyledons and first leaf. This enables Modesto to deliver maximum yield potential, together with higher oil content and quality.
We've gathered together the opinions of several leading industry experts, both about TuYV and the effectiveness of Modesto. Judge for yourself below.
Broom's Barn
'TuYV is one of the most important diseases of oilseed rape and in HGCA sponsored trials in 2009 reduced yields by as much as 30%. Our surveys this year show it is even more prevalent than last. The only way to control the disease is to use a high-quality seed treatment."
Dr Mark Stevens
Sentry
'At Sentry, oilseed rape is an important part of our rotations with over 2,700 ha sown for this harvest. We always seek to optimise output and so use Modesto on all of our crops to protect them from pests and give them the best start possible."
Richard Peck, Regional Business Manager South West
Velcourt Research and Development
"Velcourt recognises the importance of TuYV in oilseed rape. As part of an ongoing HGCA joint project, leaf sampling surveys on the 2010 crop show very high levels of virus this year. Some hotspots, such as Lincolnshire and Kent, have over 90% leaves infected. This confirms our strategy to treat all rape seed with an effective insecticide to control this important disease."
Keith Norman, Technical Director
Frontier
'In our extensive seed treatment trials programme, Frontier have compared Modesto to other seed treatments for a number of seasons. Modesto has proved more effective than all of the other products trialled, giving the lowest levels of TuYV which has translated into higher seed yield and oil content at harvest."
Jim Carswell, National Trials Manager
