Diseases to Consider

Yellow rust - New highly virulent yellow rust races have resulted in a significant lowering of NIAB ratings of some varieties. A rust active azole at T0 is an important management strategy for these varieties.

Septoria - Early protection against the most yield robbing UK wheat disease is essential.

Disease Control and Yield

It is important to apply a T0 fungicide if any of the following have increased the disease burden your wheat crop:

  • Disease susceptible varieties (especially rusts)
  • Early drilled wheat (before mid October)
  • Wheat which cannot be guaranteed to receive its T1 spray on time

You can expect T0 yield benefits of up to 0.5t/ha if the T1 spray is delayed or there is heavy early season disease pressure.

Even if your wheat crop does not fall into the above categories, you may still achieve a benefit from a T0 fungicide application.

For yellow rust control a T0 spray should contain a fast moving, rust active azole such as tebuconazole or cyproconazole.

For Septoria, the T0 fungicide application can offer some early season protection but mainly acts to reduce inoculum and pressure on later sprays.
