Winter

Information and advice on how to identify and resolve rust diseases in wheat. Many popular wheat varieties are susceptible to yellow or brown rust or both. Fungicides, such as Folicur, that are rapidly taken into the leaf are the most effective at controlling early infections. Once established in a crop, rust infections are much more difficult to eradicate requiring higher rates and inevitably greater cost.
Cleavers only start to cause significant yield loss relatively late in the season. But once rapid growth starts from late April/early May yield loss from nutrient competition is rapid as this is also a critical time for yield building in cereals. Therefore growers need to ensure that cleavers are removed before the end of April to prevent competition and consequent loss of income.
Growers of winter wheat and winter barley now have a valuable additional weapon in their armoury with the extension of the deadline for using Liberator.
